Play and Learn : Top 10 Educational Games (2008)

Wau Wau is an educational game in the form of a letter game and is intended to promote understanding of language and spelling .

In addition to the German version, an English and French version has also been developed. The letters on the playing cards are made from the seeds of the maple . Compared to well-known games like Scrabble , Boggle etc. Wau Wau offers greater flexibility when playing.

history

Wau Wau was presented in 2007 by Ansbacher Land Art artist, musician and author Thomas Fitzthum . The "Wau" in the name is derived from the English word "Wow" and is a phonetic analogy to Mau Mau . The game has been produced and distributed by Diakonie Neuendettelsau since 2011, and students at Ansbach University have been supporting the game since 2009 .

Course of the game

Basic version

Each player receives eight cards from the letters provided with letters, the remaining cards form a talon for drawing. The top card of this pile is revealed. It is now a matter of laying down all of your playing cards in one of the following ways:

  • Form a word from the playing cards received, with all words possible that are contained in a dictionary (e.g. Duden ).
  • by placing the letter (s) that are immediately before or after the letter (s) in the alphabet that were revealed from the draw pile.
  • by applying to words that have already been formed.
  • by moving the letters that have already been stored.
  • by drawing a card from the draw pile and the rest of your own cards or by placing / turning over.
  • if no word can be put down with your own cards, added to or turned over, you must draw a card and it is the next player's turn.
  • if you only have one card left, this is communicated to the other players with a "woof". If this is forgotten, a card must be drawn.
  • When the last card is put down, this is signaled to the other players by a “woof woof”. If this is forgotten, a card must also be drawn.

The card Q counts as QU , umlauts (Ä, Ö and Ü) can also be used as vowels (A, O, U), but not the other way around. There are also joker cards on which all letters of the alphabet are depicted. The jokers can therefore represent any letter in a word. The game is over when it is the turn of the first player to discard all cards. For each card that could not be discarded, the player receives one minus point.

Spell beginners (variant)

In this game variant you don't play against each other, but with each other. The rules correspond to the basic version, but there are no minus points at the end, in the last round all cards of all players should be discarded. Throughout the game, players help each other form words.

Point woof woof (variant)

This version is similar to Scrabble . The stored letters have a point value; rarer letters (e.g. Q = 3 points) are rated higher than more frequent letters (e.g. B = 1 point). The rules of the basic version apply otherwise unchanged.
