The Wave Race video game series is a racing game series from Nintendo . It is important to be the fastest to finish circuits on the water surface with a jet ski . This happens in a grand prix mode against competitors or in time trial mode (time trial) alone against the clock. A characteristic element of the game series is that buoys placed on the course have to be passed slalom-like on the correct side. If this does not happen, you get penalty points and the maximum speed is reduced. If the 5th penalty point has been imposed, the driver is disqualified. By correctly driving around the buoys, the maximum speed can be built up again.
In another game mode, it is the player's task to achieve the highest possible score by performing stunts and going through rings.
Originally a lesser-known game on the Game Boy , in which you can see the action from a bird's eye view , the series became more popular for the first time on the Nintendo 64 . As a result, the Game Boy predecessor was also subsequently released in Europe . Initially, it was planned for the Nintendo 64 version not to use jet skis, but futuristic hover companions. Later, however, they returned to the manned jet ski vehicles. The game finally appeared about 2 months after the European launch of the Nintendo 64. The game's plus points were the transparency effects and wave animations that were unknown at the time , the latter actually influencing the playability of the vehicles. This was adhered to in the successor Wave Race: Blue Storm for GameCube developed by NST , which was a starting title for the European release of the GameCube.
Since August 2007, Wave Race 64 has been available as a downloadable game for the Nintendo Wii via Virtual Console .
