history

2002-2006

The entrepreneurs Niraj Shah and Steve Conine founded the company in August 2002 in Steve's nursery in Boston as a two-man business. Shah and Conine both have Bachelor of Science degrees from Cornell University. The duo had previously operated two companies, Simplify Mobile and iXL , a global consulting company. Today Shah is the managing director and Conine is the chairman of the board and technical director.

The first website was called racksandstands.com , where the media stands and storage furniture were sold.

In 2003 the company added products from suppliers of patio and garden goods along with three online stores. Together with around 12 employees, they moved into new headquarters on Newbury Street in Boston. In the course of the following two years the company expanded its catalog to include home furnishings, office and institutional furniture, kitchen and dining room furniture, home improvement accessories, bed and bath materials, as well as luggage and lighting. In 2006 the company had its first sales of $ 100 million.

2007-2010

Over the next four years, the company expanded exponentially in markets both in the United States and abroad. In 2008, CSN Stores began delivering to Canada and selling in the UK and opened an office in London. That same year, the Boston Business Journal rated the firm as # 1 the fastest growing private e-commerce company in Massachusetts and # 4 among the fastest growing private companies in general. In 2009 the company expanded to Australia and Germany . In 2010 the company moved to its current headquarters at 177 Huntington Avenue . At the end of this year, Joss & Main was founded, an online shop with private sales promotions that are only accessible to members.

2011 to the present

In 2011, CSN Stores had over 200 online stores, mostly niche stores for special products, such as cookware.com, strollers.com and everyatomicclock.com. In an effort to operate on a larger scale, to focus traffic on a single page and to unify the company's appearance, Shah and Conine CSN Stores decided to rename Wayfair. To market the new brand and support expansion, the company raised $ 165 million in June 2011 in investments from four investment firms.

Wayfair.com was launched on September 1st, 2011. By July 2012, Wayfair had consolidated all of its niche websites under Wayfair.com, with the exception of Joss & Main and AllModern. In August 2012, Wayfair Supply established as a priority destination for Wayfair's business, government, and institutional customers. As of this writing, Wayfair is the second largest online homeware and home decoration company in the United States, and ranks 50th among all US online retailers. The company had sales of $ 380 million in 2010, and more than $ 500 million in 2011.
