WebEdition is a free web content management system (WCMS). It is a file and database-based system and can therefore store static content efficiently as well as provide complex dynamic content.

WebEdition is written in the PHP scripting language , uses MySQL as a database for data storage and, in addition to the Zend Framework, also includes its own software development kit (SDK) based on it for the development of expansion modules. The WebEdition SDK is licensed under the GNU Lesser General Public License (LGPL) .

WebEdition has a modular structure and can therefore be expanded in terms of functionality according to requirements. Even after installation, there are many modules that ensure the individual adaptability and additional performance of WebEdition. The modular system design ensures better system stability, more security and better maintenance of the system. Existing external applications can also be integrated as we: Apps (e.g. phpMyAdmin ) via the SDK .

In future development, a special focus will be placed on a barrier-free user interface. The WebEdition CMS should not only be able to create barrier-free websites, but the creation process with WebEdition should already be barrier-free .

history

The Web-CMS WebEdition was originally developed by ASTARTE New Media AG in 2001. In 2003, WebEdition was sold to a group of investors and further developed under WebEdition Software GmbH. In 2006, WebEdition Software GmbH changed its name to living-e AG and developed the CMS commercially up to version 5.1.2.5. In November 2008 living-e AG released version 6 of the WebEdition under the GPL license ( General Public License ), before further developments of the CMS were completely discontinued by living-e AG in June 2009 and all resources were handed over to the community. On February 20, 2010 the webEdition e. V. founded by 13 people in Berlin. Since then, webEdition has been further developed by former developers and the community.

use

webEdition is mainly used by small and medium-sized companies from all areas. It is estimated that webEdition has been installed and used more than 70,000 times worldwide.

Developers can use so-called we: tags to create powerful pages even without extensive programming knowledge. Individual functions and classes can be integrated into the templates using PHP.

Editors use the integrated WYSIWYG editor to enter and edit text and image material. No programming knowledge is required. WebEdition can also be used to change navigation structures, maintain complex databases and send newsletters without any technical knowledge.

In contrast to commercial software, there is no support from the manufacturer or developer with webEdition , but a steadily growing community that enriches and supports each other (German and English-speaking forum and bugbase). The community and the further development of the CMS are supported by webEdition e. V. coordinated and controlled.

Function and architecture

webEdition is operated on a web server and controlled from a web browser. Apart from a compatible web browser, no further software is required from the editor, only the web browser must be supported: for example Firefox or Internet Explorer.

webEdition consists of a frontend and a backend, the frontend is the view of the website visitors, in the backend the content of the website is maintained by editors. The view in the backend can be extensively tailored to the editor.

Range of functions

The file and database-based content management system webEdition offers a wide range of functions even in the basic version (without the existing modules). In addition to an integrated WYSIWYG editor and image processing, webEdition supports the creation and maintenance of multilingual and barrier-free websites. Depending on whether a page contains dynamic content, it can be saved as a dynamic script or as a static HTML page. The powerful template engine takes care of the display of the page in the backend as well as in the frontend. New product versions are imported via the integrated live update. All content maintained in webEdition can be saved with the integrated backup function both via the backend and via a command line tool. The basic version can be expanded using the following free modules, which are also available as open source:

User administration
Control of access rights to webEdition and additional modules
Customer management
Storage of customer data for the implementation of protected areas on the website, storage of newsletter registrations and storage of orders via the shop module

There are also prefabricated we: tags for the integration of third-party applications such as the payment solutions PayPal and Saferpay and, up to version 6, the Econda web analytics software.
