Weberocereus frohningiorum is a species of plant in the genus Weberocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). Thespecific epithet honors the German cactus lovers Hans and Uta Frohning from Türkheim.

description

Weberocereus frohningiorum growing epiphytic , initially upright and bushy with a majority from the base branching stems and later suspended. The up to 1 meter and more long and up to 7 centimeters wide, flat shoots are divided into 20 to 30 centimeter long sections due to the annual growth. The three, rarely only two, wing-like ribs are inconspicuously notched. The felty areoles on the shoots are somewhat hidden by the support scale. There are five to 14 needle-like, yellow-brown to brown, stinging thorns that are 1 to 1.2 centimeters, rarely 0.5 to 1.4 centimeters long. In addition, 18 to 32 fine, white, hair-like thorns with a length of 1 to 4 centimeters are formed.

Flower bud

The tubular to funnel-shaped flowers are 5.5 to 6 centimeters long and 3 to 4 centimeters in diameter. Your flower tube is greenish. The outer bracts are fleshy and (dark) pink, the inner ones white. The slightly tuberous pericarpel is covered with a few scales. It is bald or has a little hair . The oval, yellow and only slightly humped fruits have a length of up to 3 centimeters and a diameter of 2 centimeters. Their pulp is white.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Weberocereus frohningiorum is common in the lowlands of Costa Rica south of San José .

It was first described in 2001 by Ralf Bauer .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Critically Endangered (CR) ", d. H. listed as critically endangered.
