The wayside cross in the Looper Hof

The wayside cross Loope is a sandstone cross in Engelskirchen - Loope . It is a listed building.

location

The cross is in Loope on the side of the road “Im Hof” in front of a half-timbered house.

Description and meaning

The approximately three meter high cross is made of Lindlar sandstone and bears the inscription "In the year 1772, June, the Looper neighborhood had this cross erected in honor of God". The crucifix bears the inscription INRI above the body . The tips of the crucified Christ's feet touch a skull without a lower jaw, which can be understood as a symbol for the place of the skull of Golgotha .

A wall niche in the form of a shell ornament is worked into the middle part of the stele . There are two reliefs here .

  • The left relief represents Johannes Nepomuk , who is considered the patron saint against floods. Its illustration can be explained by the flood-prone location of Loopes in the Aggertal .
  • The right relief probably represents Barbara of Nicomedia , who is venerated as the patron saint of miners. Your illustration indicates that Loope has been mining for centuries of years.

In the lower part of the stele there is another relief that is only faintly visible. It probably shows Rochus of Montpellier , the patron saint of plague sufferers and domestic animals, to whom the Looper citizens had dedicated a Rochus chapel in the opposite Aggerufer in 1682 .

history

The cross was built in 1772 by the court community at the time. Reasons for the construction are not known. In 1982 and 1983 the cross was restored due to signs of weathering .
