Runaway house

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A runaway house is a refuge for people who want to avoid psychiatric treatment or who are looking for an alternative to conventional psychiatric treatment. In the 1970s, the first “Wegloophuizen” came into being in the Netherlands through the Gekken movement ( German for 'crazy / crazy movement'), self-help groups of psychiatric patients and former psychiatric patients.

aims

Representatives of antipsychiatry claim that contact with psychiatry always involves the risk of becoming a victim of physical or psychological violence and suffering damage in many ways (e.g. through forced admission or forced treatment with psychotropic drugs ). As part of the self-help concept, Weglaufhäuser offer alternative methods in dealing with the affected people, in which the ideas of user-supported antipsychiatry are implemented.

A runaway house can therefore offer refuge for:

  • mentally ill people or former psychiatric patients who are homeless or at risk of homelessness,
  • People who run away from mental health facilities (unless placed in a court of law),
  • People who need psychiatric treatment but are looking for an alternative to conventional treatment methods.

Typical features of working in a refugee house are:

  • Avoiding psychotropic drugs as far as possible
  • Waiver of compulsory treatment,
  • Overcoming crises and helping people to help themselves.

Refugees and initiatives in Germany

The only German refugee house so far, officially called Villa Stöckle , was founded in Berlin in 1996 by the Association for Protection from Psychiatric Violence eV , which consisted of members of the early insane offensive and the Psychiatry Complaint Center , after 15 years in advance . The house is named in honor of the co-initiator Tina Stöckle , who died on April 8, 1992 . It is assigned to the Berlin service type "crisis facility" to help overcome particular social difficulties . In addition to the housing project, the association operates an information and advice center and is also the sponsor of the individual case assistance project Support , which offers crisis support across the districts in Berlin to avoid (forced) housing.

From 1996 to 2014, half of the employees at the Berliner Weglaufhaus were themselves previously directly affected by psychiatry. From the beginning, psychiatric patients were almost exclusively employed on fee-based positions for a shorter period of time. Since March 2014, it has been mostly run by professional, unaffected social workers and educators. The contradiction inherent in the Berliner Weglaufhaus concept of meeting both the requirements of the psychiatric system for educational goals (re-education) and the political goal of the original movement (self-determination) has been unilaterally resolved: the claim to transform the life-world experiences of those affected by psychiatry into one The inclusion of a method of antipsychiatric practice was commodified by the system imperative of the psychiatric system; which in view of the origins of the movement - in the materialistic criticism of "abstract work" - would open a critical reflection on the state of a purposeful and economically oriented social work. Instead of self-critically opening up to this social contradiction in the tradition of anti-psychiatry, the Weglaufhaus continues to present this situation pragmatically as "a temporary emergency solution" resulting from the fact that "not enough applications were received from professional social workers and educators with psychiatric experience and the runaway house could not be maintained without staff. "

In Bochum , a runners-up initiative in the Ruhr area has been formed that is planning to set up a similar facility. In June 2005 another initiative for a runaway house in Saarbrücken was born with the association Help for Self-Help in Mental Crises Saarland .
