The white bean ( Thracia phaseolina ) is a type of mussel from the family of spatula clams (Thraciidae).

features

The unevenly hinged housing is up to 40 millimeters long. The right flap is more arched and slightly larger. It is unequal, with the vertebrae sitting behind the midline. It is egg-shaped in outline. The anterior dorsal margin is longer than the posterior dorsal margin and is also significantly higher. The anterior dorsal margin is slightly convexly rounded and merges into the broadly rounded anterior margin without a noticeable edge or kink. The posterior dorsal margin is almost straight to slightly concave. The transition to the slightly convex, truncated rear edge is clearly angled. The rear edge also merges with the broadly rounded ventral edge at a distinct angle. The two flaps gape at both ends.

The external ligament is a short, wide, dark brown band behind the vertebrae. The internally lying thick part sits in a triangular pit. The lock has a short, comparatively deep lithodesma (cartilage support) in front of the ligament, but is otherwise toothless. The surface line is indented, the bay reaches the rear end of the ligament pit. The ventral part of the mantle bay does not coincide with the mantle edge. The anterior sphincter is thin and the posterior thick.

The whitish skin is thin and fragile. The ornamentation consists of concentric lines that are very finely grained (only visible under the microscope!). The grain is somewhat coarser at the rear end. The inside edge of the case is smooth. The very thin periostracum is light brown to yellow; it is mostly rubbed off.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The distribution area of the species extends from Iceland and Northern Norway to Angola and the Cape Verde Islands . It is also found in the North Sea and the western Baltic Sea, as well as in the Mediterranean and Black Sea . It is proven from the waters around Madeira .

It lives buried in silty sand, sand or sandy gravel from the intertidal zone to a water depth of around 70 meters.

Taxonomy

In literature and z. Sometimes the species can also be found on newer websites under Thracia papyracea ( Poli , 1791). Tellina papyracea Poli , 1791 (December 1791), however, is a younger homonym of Tellina papyracea Gmelin , 1791 (before May 1791) and is therefore invalid. The next younger synonym now takes its place , that is Amphidesma phaseolina Lamarck , 1818.
