The rock cellars in the Weißenstädter Kellerwelt in Weißenstadt are cellar corridors carved into the granite of considerable length with side tunnels. Of the total of 200 former rock cellars, around 130 cellars still exist. They originated in the 18th century. The systems in the granite rock as well as a good earth cover insulate the cellars against frost in winter and against heat in summer.

Use of the basement

The rock cellars were used as storerooms for field crops , especially potatoes and beets, and as storage rooms for beer and ice cream . The constant temperatures in summer and winter made it possible to store ice. Today most of the cellars are no longer in use, they serve as winter quarters for bats.

Monument protection

The Weißenstadt basement world is listed as a monument of Weißenstadt and has been entered in the Bavarian list of monuments.
