The Switzerland took part in the Winter Olympics in 1956 in Cortina d'Ampezzo with a delegation of 59 athletes attended, including 51 men and eight women. The alpine skier Georges Schneider was chosen as the flag bearer of the Swiss team for the opening ceremony, at the closing ceremony the figure skater François Pache carried the Swiss flag. With a total of six medals, Switzerland took fourth place in the medal table.
