The white lady's slipper is a perennial plant with a rhizome that reaches heights of 12 to 38 centimeters. The three to four, rarely five leaves are lanceolate to oval, 1.5 to 4 inches wide, 7 to 20 inches long. They are located in the lower to middle part of the stem and are almost upright. There is always only one flower. The outer and inner tepals are greenish brown, sometimes tinted brown, often spotted reddish brown or streaked. The outer tepals are as long as the lip . The upper outer tepal is 2 to 3 centimeters long. The inner tepals are 2.5 to 4.5 inches long and twisted. The lip is white, 2 to 3 centimeters long with a 1 to 1.5 centimeter large, pointed opening at the front. The staminodium is lance-shaped to oval.

Flowering time is from April to June. The leaves are barely developed at the time of flowering, the plants only reach their size after flowering.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 20.

Occurrence

The white lady's slipper occurs in warm temperate to temperate eastern and central North America on limestone and marl. It grows there in damp to fresh prairie , damp meadows, gorges, moors and swamps, dry rock corridors, rarely in light, damp forests. Altitudes of 70 to 700 (1000) meters are settled. The distribution area includes southern Canada and the north-central and eastern United States.

use

The white lady's slipper is rarely used as an ornamental plant for the edges of bog and swamp beds as well as vessels.
