The White Graszünsler ( Crambus perlella ) is a small butterfly from the family of Crambidae .

features

The moths reach a wingspan of 20–28 mm. The forewings are ivory in color with a silky sheen. The hind wings, however, are either white or matt yellow-gray. The form f. warringtonellus has a striking striped pattern.

Similar species

Crambus perlella can with the winder Eana argentana be confused. However, this has shorter labial palps , which reach a maximum of the length of the head.

distribution

The white common borer is represented with several subspecies in the Holarctic . The species is widespread and common in Europe. Their distribution area extends in the south to North Africa and in the east to the Far East (Japan and China). In North America, the common white grass borer extends from the east coast to the west coast in southern Canada and in the north of the USA .

Way of life

Meadows and fields form the typical habitat of the white grass borer. The species forms one generation per year. The larvae feed on various grasses such as real sheep fescue ( Festuca ovina ) or wire smear ( Deschampsia flexuosa ). They overwinter in a web at the base of the grass stalks. The pupation can in a silk cocoon to take place or in the ground. The moths appear from the end of May and fly into August. The daytime and nocturnal butterflies are attracted by artificial light sources.
