White cross

The White Cross on the delimitation of the small town of Deidesheim in the Palatinate is a field cross that is considered a cultural monument under the Monument Protection Act of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate .

description

The cross is a few dozen meters east of Deidesheim in the "Klostergarten" corridor. Country road 527 in the direction of Niederkirchen used to run right past the cross, today it runs a few meters further north.

The cross, which stands on a late Baroque base, is made of sandstone. It has a height of 247 cm, the crossbar is 120 cm long. The stone body that hangs on the cross is 115 cm tall. The base under the cross is 71 cm high and 98 cm wide. The inscription "PIE JESU DOMINE DONA EIS REQUIEM." Is embedded at the lower end of the cross stem.

history

The White Cross in its current form dates from 1892, but it was mentioned several times as early as the 18th century. The cross then marked the border between the Deidesheim parish and that of Niederkirchen, which was newly founded in 1750. The name of the cross comes from the white paint it was once painted with. According to a protocol drawn up by the Deidesheim city council on January 29, 1892, the owner of the property on which the cross stood asked permission to renovate the White Cross. The city council granted his request.
