The white-winged petrel ( Pterodroma leucoptera ) is a petrel of the extensive genus of the hook shearwater .

There are two recognized subspecies of the white-winged petrel; Pt. l. leucoptera and Pt. l. caledonica .

Appearance

White-wing petrels are on average about 29 cm tall and 175 g heavy. The wingspan is about 70 cm. They have a black cap that extends over the eye area, neck and throat, where it pulls down a little. Otherwise, the top of the birds is gray with a dark gray V-shaped pattern. The underside of the bird is mostly white. The wing edges are dark and a darker, narrowing bar extends from the wing tips towards the center of the body. The tail is short and round.

distribution

The subspecies Pt. l. leucoptera breeds on Cabbage Tree Island and Boondelbah Island , two neighboring New South Wales islands on the Australian coast. Originally, the birds only breeded on Cabbage Tree Island. After some birds brooded on Boondelbah Island by themselves in 1995, several hundred chicks were relocated from Cabbage Tree Island to Boondelbah Island in 1999 and 2000 in order to establish a second nesting site and to secure the species. The establishment of the second breeding site was successful.

The subspecies Pt. l. caledonica breeds in New Caledonia .

During the breeding season, non-breeding birds can be found in the Tasman Sea area from Tasmania to the Foveaux Strait in South New Zealand . From July to October the birds migrate to the tropical east Pacific , especially to the Galapagos Islands .

The species is classified by the IUCN on the Red List of Threatened Species as vulnerable (English for endangered ).
