The Weidenburg - Arena Salix is a building made from living willow branches in the Spreewald town of Burg .

The Weidenburg is located west of the road from Burg to Byhleguhre in the immediate vicinity of the Schlossberg and the Burger Bismarck Tower .

architecture

The system consists of woven, but living and growing willow branches of the cricket willow (Salix alba var. Calva) , a form of the silver willow , which form a building along predetermined growth directions. In addition to a central interior area with a domed structure, there is an entrance area, additional lounge areas and an event area. The willow rods were attached using coconut yarn and synthetic materials. The large dome reaches a height of 10 meters, with a footprint of 20 by 14 meters. The dome above the stage is 12 meters high and has a footprint of 12 by 8 meters. The smaller entrance dome spans a circular area with a diameter of 8 meters and a height of also 8 meters. The building has a length of 36 meters without the entrance area and an area of ​​7878 m² and was created in 2006 by the Swiss architect Marcel Kalberer . Four willow specialists and around 30 schoolchildren and students from the region were involved in the construction. The property was financed through a LEADER plus project. The architect had already realized a similar object with the Schlepzig Weidendom in the Spreewald.
