The Weikendorfer Remise is the oldest nature reserve in Austria. The protected area is located in Marchfeld south of Gänserndorf . Colloquially it is also known as the Siebenbrunner Heide . The protection was placed by the state parliament resolution of June 8, 1927. Today, the entire area is part of the European protected areas Pannonian sand dunes and sandy soil and Prater terrace . The inland dunes are unique in this nature reserve .

Emergence

This steppe landscape was created on a layer of drifting sand that was only several centimeters thick. Grazing with sheep and goats in the 16th and 17th centuries mobilized the sand surface and created dunes. Incorrect planting of willows in the 18th century could not stop these migrations. In the 20th century, the dunes were stabilized, but local areas of life and conditions were lost. In the 1970s, in violation of the regulations, afforestation was carried out within the nature reserve.

flora

A rare flora can also be found in the dry grassland area. You can find the yellow straw flower and the fluffy stone rose , which has one of its last Austrian low-lying deposits here.

scope

The nature reserve is located entirely in the municipality of Weikendorf and includes the properties with the numbers 1210/1, 1210/2, 1216 / 1–3 and 1217 / 1–3.

Others

There is a soil moisture measuring point of the Federal Office for Water Management in the area.
