Veikko Heiskanen
Veikko Aleksanteri Heiskanen (born July 23, 1895 in Kangaslampi , † October 23, 1971 in Helsinki ) was the leading geodesist in Scandinavia between 1940 and 1970; he and Helmut Moritz wrote the most famous textbook on physical geodesy called Physical Geodesy (1967).
Heiskanen founded the theory of isostasy with George Biddell Airy and published some 100 specialist articles that also touched on the field of geophysics .
There was also close cooperation with scientists from the German-speaking area with Friedrich Hopfner , Walter Hofmann , Karl Ledersteger and others.
In 1959 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . The deep sea mountain Heiskanen Knoll in the Antarctic is named after him.
