Weimar Triangle 2011
The 8th Summit of the Weimar Triangle took place on February 7, 2011, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Weimar Triangle, in Warsaw , Poland . It was the first meeting of the discussion forum since 2006. The chairmanship was held by the Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski .

The central theme of the summit was the revival of the Weimar Triangle. In this context, joint youth work and joint diplomatic training were discussed in particular . Other topics were Eastern European policy , security and defense policy, and the economic and financial policy of the euro countries .
Revival of the triangle
The participants confirmed that three-dimensional cooperation should finally become relevant in terms of European policy. So far, all efforts of the three countries to develop a lasting alliance that provided impetus for Europe had failed.
The three heads of state and government spoke out in favor of holding regular meetings as part of the Weimar Triangle. They also announced that their cooperation should not be limited to an annual meeting of politicians. Instead, the activities of the Weimar Triangle are to be expanded to include the entire politics of the three countries as well as cooperation between scientists, local parliamentarians and youth exchanges. At the same time, the participants expressed their intention to meet regularly with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev in the future. For the future, they hoped for a successful revival of the Weimar Triangle, explained the participants.
Youth and culture
The promotion of youth work and cultural exchange was a particular concern of the meeting. The participants declared their intention to develop the work of the Franco-German and Polish-German youth organizations into a tripartite youth work. Therefore, an agreement was finally reached in Warsaw on the establishment of a German-French-Polish youth organization in order to support cultural exchange between the three countries. In connection with the promotion of cultural exchange, the heads of government had also announced that an expansion of the Franco-German cultural channel Arte to include a third Polish program would be examined by experts. The participants announced closer cooperation in training young diplomats.
Eastern European Policy
In the talks on Eastern European policy, Chancellor Merkel emphasized the important role Poland plays in relations with the countries of Eastern Europe. Merkel and Sarkozy announced that they would further intensify cooperation between the EU and its eastern neighbors with the help of Poland . Merkel particularly emphasized the initiatives of the Polish government in the direction of Belarus and Ukraine .
Security and Defense Policy
In terms of security and defense policy, French President Sarkozy and Poland's President Komorowski advocated intensive cooperation on defense issues. Komorowski called for more cooperation in these areas.
Economic and financial policy
Another topic at the summit was European economic and financial policy. On the initiative of Merkel and Sarkozy, the Euro Plus Pact had previously been agreed at an EU Council meeting . At the summit in Warsaw, Merkel named Poland a good example with its disciplined budget policy and its statutory debt brake, and promised the country that it would join the pact. "We would be happy if Poland participated, because it is a reform-loving country, a country that has a tradition of consolidation ," Merkel said in Warsaw.
