From 2010 to 2014 he heads the Graduate College 1126 “Development of new computer-based methods for the workplace of the future in soft tissue surgery” in Heidelberg, also from 2010 the section “Minimally Invasive Surgery” (renamed in 2014 to “Minimally Invasive and Obesity Surgery”) and from 2012 He also took over the scientific management of the Collaborative Research Center SFB / TRR 125 "Cognition-Guided Surgery" , funded by the German Research Foundation . Memberships

Beat Müller is a member of the following companies:

  • International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders (IFSO)
  • European Association for Endoscopic Surgery and other interventional Techniques (EAES), also a member of the Technology Committee
  • German Society for Surgery
  • German Society for General and Visceral Surgery
    • Surgical Working Group for Minimally Invasive Surgery (CAMIC)
    • Deputy Chairman of the Surgical Working Group on Obesity Therapy and Metabolic Surgery (CAADIP)
    • Upper Gastrointestinal Surgical Working Group (CAOGI)

Focus of work

Beat Müller's surgical focus is minimally invasive operations, especially as part of the treatment of cancer in the abdomen. He has a particular interest in the upper gastrointestinal tract with the treatment of benign and malignant diseases of the esophagus and stomach, including obesity and metabolic diseases such as diabetes mellitus.

Research focus

Beat Müller's scientific interest lies primarily in the area of minimally invasive surgery. Here he deals with the development and research of new technologies such as robotics, computer-based and image-based methods and artificial intelligence. This resulted in the successful application and scientific management of the Graduate School "Intelligent Surgery" and the Collaborative Research Center "Cognition-Guided Surgery" as well as the establishment of an experimental operating theater for researching new technology and a multimodal training center for minimally invasive surgery. The clinical research focus is on minimally invasive metabolic and oncological surgery. Here he deals with various translational projects and clinical studies, e.g. B. to research the mechanisms of metabolic surgery and the implementation of minimally invasive techniques in oncological surgery. In this context, the establishment of a laboratory for research into metabolic surgery (Turhan laboratory) should be mentioned, for example.

The DiaSurg2 study initiated by him is the first Germany-wide multicenter study in which the surgical therapy of type 2 diabetes mellitus (gastric bypass) is compared with the long-term drug therapy. Further clinical trials under his leadership are the BariSurg study, the gastric bypass with the Schlauchmagenresektion compares and MIVATE study, the total minimally invasive oncologic esophagectomy compared with the open approach. More than 100 publications in internationally recognized journals have resulted from his academic work. In line with his scientific activities, he has been a member of the Technology Committee of the European Association for Endoscopic Surgery and other Interventional Techniques (EAES) and Deputy Chairman of the Surgical Working Group for Obesity and Metabolic Surgery (CAADIP) since 2016.
