FJ GRITSCH Mauritiushof  is an  Austrian vineyard  in  Spitz in wine-growing region in Lower Austria .

history

The Mauritiushof in Spitz was built in the 13th century and was then the reading courtyard of the monks from Niederaltaich (Bavaria). The name "Mauritiushof" has its origin in the neighboring parish church, which is consecrated to St. Mauritius . The historic property, which has already served as a motif for various artists (e.g. Siegfried Stoitzner ) several times , came into the family's possession in 1799. Meanwhile, Franz-Josef Gritsch, in the 7th generation, runs the winery. The winery is a member of the Vinea Wachau Nobilis Districtus .

The vineyards of Franz-Josef Gritsch are located in the best terrace locations in the Wachau - Singerriedel, 1000-Eimerberg, Kalkofen, Loibenberg, Steinporz, Axpoint, Hochrain and Setzberg. The vineyard area is around 15 hectares, mainly planted with white grape varieties, mainly Grüner Veltliner and Riesling as well as Neuburger , Muscatel and Sauvignon Blanc . The last large terrace vineyard within the historic Dürnstein fortifications is one of the estate's treasures. The extremely steep, south-facing terraces extend above Dürnstein Castle along the western city wall next to the blue baroque tower, which can only be reached via a narrow footpath.

Atzberg

A special feature is the Atzberg location in Spitz , it is an extremely steep location. As early as 1382, the "Ärzberg" was mentioned as a winegrowing estate in a document. Singerriedel and Atzberg may have formed a geological unit earlier, before the Mieslingbach separated the two. The soil - as the original name suggests - is ore-containing (red rock with gneiss and slate structure and very barren soil). The extreme mineral content of the soil is scientifically proven by numerous mineral finds. However, due to the arduous processing of this steep vineyard, viticulture on Atzberg was given up in the 1950s. Since 2008 this has been recultivated by three wine enthusiasts Franz-Josef Gritsch, Robert Wutzl and Hans Schmid.

Kalmuck Wachau

The "kalmuck Wachau" wines grow on various stone terraces from Loiben to Spitz. The typical, so-called Kalmuck pattern of the traditional Kalmuck fabric, the Wachau costume, not only characterizes the wines, the wine cellar of Franz-Josef Gritsch in Spitz also has the checked design.
