Weinmann was a manufacturer of bicycle brakes and other bicycle components in Schaffhausen , Switzerland.

history

The company was founded in 1933 in Schaffhausen, on the German-Swiss border, by Karl and Otto Weinmann. The first entry in the register in Schaffhausen dates back to 1927; the company developed from the bicycle and motorcycle business founded in 1920 by father Karl Weinmann in Singen . Gradually Weinmann became known among the manufacturers of lightweight bicycles. On April 1, 1944, the production facilities suffered serious damage in bombing raids during the Second World War , but a new factory opened in 1945. Weinmann initially focused his developments on bicycle brakes , later also on bicycle rims . In 1961 the company was converted to a stock corporation. The Weinmann rims became very well known in the 1960s, and Weinmann also started delivering brake parts to Dia-Compe in the 1960s . In the 1970s and 1980s, this cooperation resulted in the Weinmann top model "Carrera".

In 1973 the company had more than 700 employees and branches (Weinmann & Co. KG) in Singen, (Germany) and Schoten , ( Belgium ). In 1983 around 800 employees worked at Weinmann, who produced over 8 million bicycle brakes annually; At that time Weinmann was the world's largest manufacturer of bicycle brakes. The Swiss plant was closed in 1991, the branches in Germany and Belgium no longer exist today.

In 1997 the corporate purpose of Weinmann AG was changed to undertake real estate transactions of all kinds, in particular the purchase, sale, management and exploitation of real estate ; In 2002 the company was permanently deleted.

Brake technology

In 1975 Weinmann brought his “Carrera”, one of the most modern racing bike brakes of the time, onto the market. In 1984 the company launched a cantilever brake for the increasingly popular mountain bikes as well as the HP turbo brake, a unique central pull brake in which the brake pads were pressed against the rim using a worm gear .
