The grapevine chapel

The grapevine chapel is located in Hünenberg in the canton of Zug. The chapel was built around 1770 and is now a listed building .

location

The chapel is located in the village west of the parish church, directly on the edge of the slope to the Reuss level in the immediate vicinity of a small vineyard area, which explains the name of the chapel.

history

Before 1760 there was a cross on the site of today's chapel, which was badly damaged in a storm in 1760. So it was decided to replace it with a chapel. The small chapel was completed in 1762 and housed a copy of the image of Our Lady of Genazzano .
As early as 1768 it was decided to replace the chapel with a larger chapel. In 1769, the masonry and stone carving work for the new building was awarded to the brothers Jophanes Baltasar Degen and Lukas Degen . The shell was completed in 1770, the interior in 1771. From 1764, there was a cloister next to the chapel for a few years .
In 1871 the chapel was renovated on the occasion of the centenary, in 1897 the wooden choir grille was replaced by an iron one, which, however, no longer exists. The installation of the colored windows in 1897 was followed in 1898 by the restoration of the choir arch picture and the new production of the two side altar pictures. Another interior restoration took place between 1924 and 1925, further restoration work in 1976 and 1987. The sacristy attached to the side was torn down in 1924 and replaced by a larger extension.

Building

Interior of the grapevine chapel. View of the choir

The structure consists of a two-axle nave with a non-retracted choir with a three-eighth end. The choir floor is two steps higher than the nave. On the gable roof a six-sided is skylights with hood. The ship has two arched windows on both sides. In the diagonal sides of the choir there is an upright oval window and a rectangular window with recessed semi-circles above and below. On the west wall above the main entrance there is a sign with a hipped roof supported by two columns . The rectangular portal consists of a sandstone structure with an ear frame and a bulged frieze with the date 1771. The segmented gable is broken off. In terms of stylistic age, it is assumed that the portal was moved here and is not a new construction.

The ship has a flat ceiling with wide covings on the long side, into which the straight stitch caps cut.

Interior

The main altar

On both sides of the choir arch is the choir arch picture from 1772. The painting shows the Annunciation and the Visitation. It is painted on canvas and has a detailed donor inscription on the back.

The main altar is a rococo altar divided by two columns, made of marble and marbled wood. There is no master on the altar, so a clear assignment is not possible. The altar, however, most likely comes from a Tyrolean master who was active in Baar and Frauental at the time and houses the picture donated in 1762 for the first chapel. The date 1797 and the alliance coat of arms Baumgartner-Lutzinger can be found on the frame. To the side of the columns are the two statues of St. Josepf and St. Mathias, which have now been replaced by copies (originals have been preserved). Two putti are placed above the pillars , in between is the curved gable with an oculus with clouds and a halo as well as the Holy Spirit dove. The ocular is backlit through a round window.

The main altarpiece shows how two angels carry the miraculous image of Our Lady of Genazzano across the sea. On the back of the copy is a detailed report on the foundation and production in Italy.

Instead of side altars, the chapel has side pictures from 1898. These are by the painter Fischer.

There is a crucifix in the choir arch . The figure was carved by Hans Peter Bütler .

On both sides there is a way of the cross made of painted wooden panels from the time the chapel was built. Under the gallery in the interior there are some votive pictures , the oldest from 1761.
