The Weisse Flotte Düsseldorf is an operation of the Weisse Flotte Düsseldorf / Duisburg GmbH and operates primarily from Düsseldorf passenger shipping on the Rhine between Duisburg and Cologne .
history
After the only Düsseldorf Rhine bridge had been destroyed shortly before the end of the Second World War, the British military government decided to allow the ferry service across the Rhine between the old town and Oberkassel and obliged the public transport company Rheinbahn to set up this connection. From the mid-1950s onwards, the Rheinbahn expanded its fleet and offered regular services between the Düsseldorf harbor and Kaiserswerth with a total of seven stops as well as various excursions.
From the eighties, the overall loss-making operation was gradually thinned out. In the end, the Rheinbahn fleet could only be maintained with urban subsidies of up to 1.5 million DM per year. In 1993, Dr. Ing.Peter Küffner runs his fleet of four passenger ships and eleven riser systems . Together with his sons Peter and Michael, he modernized the company, now known as Weisse Flotte Düsseldorf, and subsequently expanded it. Since then, the Weisse Flotte Düsseldorf has not only managed without subsidies, but has also been operating profitably.
