The Global Crop Diversity Trust ( English : Global Crop Diversity Trust , GCDT) is an independent international organization that has the goal of diversity of varieties of seeds of crops ( agricultural biodiversity ) to preserve and keep available to the nutrition of the world's population ensured.

History and structure

The GCDT 2005 was established as a joint venture of the UN - Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) in the form of a foundation . In 2006, the World Trust Fund concluded an agreement with the governing body of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture ( International Seed Treaty for short ), in which it recognizes the Trust as an essential element of its strategy and as an independent scientific organization. GCDT has raised approximately $ 100 million in funding for its goals through fundraising from numerous states, organizations, and corporations.

The World Trust Fund has offices at the FAO and at Bioversity International (former name: International Plant Genetic Resources Institute, IPGRI) in Rome . The headquarters of the organization was initially Rome, but was subsequently moved to Bonn . The GCDT has been headed by Åslaug Marie Haga from Norway as Executive Director since 2013 .

activities

The World Trust Fund is initially working on developing regional conservation strategies. The GCDT is also working with the Norwegian government and the Nordic Gene Bank to set up the Svalbard Global Seed Vault , a gene bank set up as a safety reserve for existing seed gene banks on the island of Svalbard (Spitzbergen). The foundation stone was laid on June 19, 2006, and the seed bank was officially opened on February 26, 2008.
