When evening approaches very gently and softly is one of the best known and most sung Abendlieder for scouts and bündisch groups in Germany, but it is also in the folk - and bards sang scene.

Emergence

The journey song "When the evening approaches, very gently and quietly" was written in 1982 in the German Forest Youth . The three stanzas of the text come from Erik Martin (known in the youth groups under the trip name Mac ); he also wrote the two-part melody movement. The song became known when a group of rangers from Lübeck performed it at the “Hamburger Singewettstreit” in 1984 in the Congress Center . At the same time it appeared in printed form in the “Liederblatt deutscher Jugend”. Today it can be found in almost all Bündischen or boy scout song books. There is also a Polish and a French version.

Content-related statement and meaning

Text and melody, in which major and minor alternate, express a mood of romance and togetherness. The emotional image (shadows flickering on the edge of the ruins) of a community by the fire is described, which confirms its uniqueness and togetherness when it sings in the last stanza: Anyone who believes he can walk alone will be very easy in this world blown away . In addition, friendship and mutual celebration are conjured up in the refrain :

And if you never think of your friends
and never serve the red wine,
you can stay where you are.
There is certainly a cold wind outside,
but the fires have not been extinguished
for us singers, as you know.

In a review of Martin's songs, the folk song researcher Professor Ernst Klusen remarked that they were “expressive melodies” that deserved to penetrate the inner circle of youth movements ; he especially mentioned this evening song. The editor-in-chief Michael Fritz wrote in his alliance magazine Der Eisbrecher that the song had become “something like a hymn of the new alliance self-esteem.” The song can now also be found in fantasy games (e.g. in the live role-playing game LARP ), and it is sung in folk and as a medieval bard song, e.g. B. from the group Die Galgenvögel or from the bard "Ranarion" .
