Wenn ich remain (English original title: If I Stay ) is a youth novel and thriller by Gayle Forman , which originally appeared in 2009. The German translation by Alexandra Ernst was published by Blanvalet Verlag in 2010.

The novel is about 17-year-old Mia, who is struggling with the aftermath of a devastating car accident . In coma Mia experienced an out of body experience and watches as her friends and family gather at the hospital with her. As memories of the past slide by, she has to choose whether to wake up and live a life that is much more difficult than she expected or whether to die.

Successor title and review

The successor with the title Lovesong (English original title: Where She Went ) appeared for the first time in April 2011, the German translation by Bettina Spangler in June of the same year.

The novel was largely received positively.

Lynn Rashid of the School Library Journal said the novel features "compelling characters" who "make readers laugh, cry and love" and "challenge the boundaries of family and love." Mia has a “compelling story,” says Rashid.

Regarding thematic interpretations, Elle Wolterbeek of the Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy said that "music is an extremely important aspect of the story".

filming

In December 2010, it was announced that Summit Entertainment was working on a film based on the novel. Dakota Fanning , Chloë Grace Moretz and Emily Browning were under discussion to take on the role of Mia. In the end, the role went to Moretz. Catherine Hardwicke was originally supposed to direct, but was replaced by Brazilian filmmaker Heitor Dhalia, who later also resigned. In January 2013, the lead role was cast to Moretz and RJ Cutler was announced as the new director of the film. In January 2014 it was announced that Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Warner Bros. Pictures would be distributing the film and the release date was August 22, 2014. The film opened in German cinemas on September 18, 2014.
