action

After a stormy winter day, school in Portland is canceled for Mia Hall, her father Denny, the teacher, and her brother Teddy. So you decide to go on a trip to see your grandparents. Mother Kat then reports sick to her employer so that she can also go with her.

A flashback shows Mia being teased; the father was in a rock band and the mother a partying punk rock lover. Her parents took Mia to concerts when she was little. When shopping in a music store, Mia, contrary to her parents' wishes, wants a cello and not an electric guitar. Her parents find it difficult to understand Mia's love for the cello, but then allow her to visit a music student who gives Mia cello lessons. Years later, Mia has mastered the instrument very well. Adam Wilde, a classmate of Mias and himself a band leader, watches the young woman play and is fascinated by her. He later invites her to a cello concert. There they get closer for the first time and kiss.

Back in the present and the trip to the grandparents: The family car collides with an oncoming truck. Mia then has an out of body experience and sees her body being treated by doctors. She tries to ask the doctors how her family members are, but gets no answer and realizes that no one can see or hear her. She ends up in the hospital and sees herself during an operation. A nurse whispers to her body that she should stay and not give up and that the doctors will try everything, but that she must also fight.

At this point we look back again: Mia attends a concert by Adam and his band “Willamette Stone”. She realizes that she doesn't fit into this scene. The band gets more and more recognition, later even a contract with a label. As a result, Adam is on the road more and more, which is not exactly good for the relationship. On the advice of her grandfather, Mia applies to the Juilliard Music Academy in New York and is invited to an audition in San Francisco. Mia is scared to tell Adam about it. They had planned to move in together, which would not be possible if they were admitted to the Juillard. When she overcomes herself and finally does, he draws a line for the time being and disappears for a week.

Back in the present: Mia realizes that her brother Teddy is in a kind of coma, but that it looks good for him. Adam wants to see Mia, but is not allowed to visit her because he does not belong to the family. Mia also learns that her mother Kat died at the scene of the accident and her father Denny died during the operation. Later she also learns that Teddy didn't make it and didn't survive a brain hemorrhage . Mia's grandfather pays her a visit and tells her that her father gave up the band to give Mia a better life. He also tells her that she can safely say goodbye to her life. Mia then decides that she wants to die and go to her family on the other side.

In another flashback, Mia sees herself at an audition at the Juilliard Music Academy, where she's playing better than ever in her entire life. After she and Adam have just made up, they talk again about their future and decide to part ways.

Back in the present, Mia seems stable enough to get more visitors. Just as Mia is about to follow the light up to the sky, she hears the music of her favorite composer Ludwig van Beethoven through the hospital's loudspeakers . This comes from Adam's iPod - whose headphones he put on Mia. He has a letter from the Juilliard Music Academy with him saying that Mia has been accepted. He also promises Mia that he will do anything for her if she only stays. Mia, who once again sees the many beautiful moments in her life pass by, opens her eyes and plunges into Adam's gaze.

Production notes

In December 2010, it was announced that Summit Entertainment was working on a film based on the novel. Dakota Fanning , Chloë Grace Moretz and Emily Browning were under discussion to take on the role of Mia. In the end, the role went to Moretz.

In January 2013, Moretz was cast in the lead role and R. J. Cutler was announced as the new director of the film.

background

Seven months before shooting began, Moretz began practicing for her role on the cello and learning to play as well as possible. Despite their best efforts, a double was used for the cello scenes. In the corresponding scenes, only Moretz's head could be seen, which was placed over the head of the musical double.
