Wenzel Linck , baptized as Wentzl Bernard Linck , (born March 29, 1736 in Neudek , † February 8, 1797 in Olomouc ) was a Bohemian Jesuit and missionary. His merit was the geographic exploration of the Baja California peninsula in today's Mexico .

Life

Wenzel Linck was born as the son of the city judge and primator Wenzel Prokop Linck († 1771) and his second wife Anna Catharina born. Schuster (* 1712) born in Neudek.

He entered the Jesuit order at the age of 18 and studied philosophy in Brno and Prague . Sent to Mexico as a missionary, Linck continued his studies in Mexico City and Puebla between 1756 and 1761 . In 1762 he was assigned to the Santa Gertrudis Jesuit Station in Baja California. Linck founded the Mission San Francisco de Borja Adac north of it, in the area of ​​the Cochimi Indians. For the next five years he managed the station and conducted expeditions to future mission locations. In order to finally clarify the question of whether Baja California is an island (" Island of California "), Linck undertook the ambitious attempt to build the lower Colorado Riverto achieve, but failed. He recorded his research results in a diary. When in 1767 by King Charles III. the order was issued to expel the Jesuits from America, and Linck returned to Bohemia. He died in Olomouc.
