description

Close-up of the patron saint of Naumburg

The bearded patron saint of the city of Naumburg in armor with a lance and a shield with the city's coat of arms consisting of key and sword is located on the round fountain with a diameter of approx. 2-3 meters and a height of approx. 1.20 meters . The figure stands on a high plinth with a Corinthian capital as a statue base.

The Wenceslas Fountain, first mentioned in 1459 as the “Steinerner Born” market fountain, was, like all fountains in Naumburg, connected to the urban tube fountain system. In 1579 the figure of the city patron was placed on the fountain, which was newly built in 1498. It was created by the Naumburg sculptor Heinrich Hase , who, in addition to this figure, also created the sermon chair in the Wenceslas Church , which was later replaced by a baroque pulpit in 1584 . In 1940 storms destroyed this figure , so that a true-to-original replica has stood here since 1949.
