Workshop manual
A workshop manual is a manual with detailed and extensive information on the repair and maintenance of a motor vehicle, machine or device. It is issued directly by the respective manufacturer. The respective repair steps are precisely described and often illustrated with numerous graphics and exploded views. It contains technical data, dimensions, special tools, filling quantities and safety instructions . Official workshop manuals from the manufacturer are protected by copyright and are usually only available in electronic form for authorized workshops or are offered online by special publishers. Brand clubs or committed individuals often take care of reprints or digital copies when the manufacturer no longer exists. Historical workshop manuals are therefore also valuable sources of data on vehicles and devices that are no longer manufactured, in addition to their actual intended use.
A workshop manual is identical in terms of quality and content to a workshop manual and, in addition to repairs, offers help with restoration . Due to their size, repair guidelines are subdivided into several assemblies such as the engine, transmission, body, electrical system and chassis.
A repair manual is less extensive than a workshop manual and enables the layman to carry out easier work himself. Work such as the complete dismantling of an engine or a gearbox is not possible with repair instructions because the depth of detail is insufficient and information on special tools is missing. The most important German-speaking publishers for repair manuals include the “ Now I help myself ” manuals from Motorbuchverlag and the “This is how it's done” repair manuals from Delius Klasing . Well-known English-language repair manuals are Clymer Repair Manual and Haynes Manual . Military agencies or other authorities issue their own repair instructions.
