Werner Aberer (born August 27, 1953 in Hohenems , Vorarlberg) is an Austrian dermatologist and allergist who was director of the University Clinic for Dermatology and Venereology in Graz until September 30, 2018. Aberer is the author of numerous scientific publications and guidelines and has been active in national and international scientific societies.

Scientific career

After graduating from high school in Bregenz in 1971, Aberer studied at the University of Innsbruck and was awarded a Dr. med univ. After graduation, he worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Biochemical Pharmacology. In 1978 he began his specialist training as a dermatologist at the University Dermatology Clinic in Innsbruck under the management board of Klaus Wolff. In 1981 he was appointed to the board of directors of the I. University Dermatology Clinic at the University of Vienna, and Aberer also continued his specialist training in Vienna. During his training, he spent a period abroad from 1984 to 1985 at the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS, National Institutes of Health) in Bethesda , Maryland, USA.

In 1985 he became a specialist in dermatology and venereology, in 1987 he completed his habilitation in dermatology and venereology and, as an associate professor, was head of the allergy outpatient clinic at the 1st University Dermatology Clinic from 1987 to 1993.

In 1993 he was appointed head of the department for environmental dermatology and venereology at the University Dermatology Clinic in Graz. In 1996 he founded the Graz Allergy Day, which has taken place annually since then. From 2008 to 2018 he was the director of the Dermatology Clinic in Graz.

Scientific achievements

Aberer is the author and co-author of 351 scientific publications. His work has been cited over 10,000 times. The most frequently cited work comes from his early scientific work phase, in which he dealt with immune cells of the skin, the so-called Langerhans cells . The work "Ultraviolet light depletes surface markers of Langerhans cells" was published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology in 1981 and cited 447 times to date (as of 2018).
