Werner Krieg

Gustav Albert Werner Krieg (born June 13, 1908 in Halle an der Saale , † January 17, 1989 in Cologne ) was a German librarian .

Life

Werner Krieg was the only child of the chief tax inspector Karl Wilhelm Gustav Krieg (1874–1947) and his wife Franziska Hedwig Laura, nee. Brinck (1873-1940), whose fathers were also civil servants. He attended the city high school in his native Halle, where he graduated from high school in 1927. He then studied classical philology, German and philosophy in Halle and Marburg. In 1934 he finished his studies in Halle with a dissertation on the Orestes of Euripides and the state examination. After training as a librarian at the Halle University Library under Carl Wendel , he worked at the Berlin State Library until 1940 .

After the Second World War and as a prisoner of war, Krieg came to the University and City Library of Cologne , which he headed from 1960 to 1971. During his term of office, he moved to the new building, which is still in use today, based on a design by Rolf Gutbrod (which he had rejected from the user's point of view in the context of the competition) and the conversion of the book signatures to computer-compatible form. In addition, he campaigned intensively for the Association of Libraries of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia with a central catalog and simplified interlibrary loan and in professional associations. From 1971 until his retirement on June 30, 1973, he took over the full-time management of the Librarian Training Institute of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia in Cologne , which he had previously managed part-time.
