Carl Wendel (born December 2, 1874 in Erfurt , † July 16, 1951 in Halle an der Saale ) was a German classical philologist , librarian and book scholar .

Life

Carl Wendel studied Protestant theology at the universities of Tübingen and Halle , where he passed the theological exam in 1897. However, he did not embark on an ecclesiastical career, but deepened his studies of ancient literature. In 1900 he was at Friedrich Blass with the dissertation De nominibus bucolicis Dr. phil. PhD .

From 1900 to 1902 he worked as a volunteer at the University Library in Halle . In 1902 he passed the library examination under Karl Dziatzko at the University of Göttingen and went to the University Library of Greifswald as an assistant librarian . In 1906 he returned to Halle as a full-time librarian.

In addition to his work, Wendel found the time to do intensive scientific work. He dealt with the Greek bucolic and mythography , with the scholias and with the ancient book and library system. In addition to essays, lectures and reviews, he also wrote numerous articles for the Realencyclopadie of classical antiquity .

In 1920 Wendel received his first leading librarianship as deputy director of the University Library in Breslau . In 1925 he became head of the state and university library in Königsberg . In 1927 he returned to Halle as director of the university library. On March 31, 1938, he took early retirement, on the one hand for health reasons, on the other hand to escape the political pressure of National Socialism . In the last years of his life he concentrated entirely on his scientific work.

After the end of the Second World War , Wendel worked on the new library commission that the state government had convened. He declined the offer to take over the library management again. However, from 1947 he took on a teaching position for philological and historical auxiliary sciences and from 1949 he was a professor for Byzantine Studies .
