Werner Mangold (sociologist)

Werner Mangold (born May 21, 1927 in Amsterdam ; † February 11, 2020 ) was a German sociologist . He was the founder of the Institute for Sociology at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and from 1968 to 1992 professor for sociology .

Life

After studying sociology, psychology and philosophy at the University of Frankfurt from 1950 to 1958, Werner Mangold began his academic career as a research assistant at the Institute for Social Research in Frankfurt with Max Horkheimer and Theodor W. Adorno . There he turned early to the field of empirical social research , which is still his scientific interest today. The work that was done then on the method of group discussion has given qualitative social research important impulses that continue to the present day.

Werner Mangold received his first call in 1962 at the Pedagogical University of Osnabrück. There he dealt with educational research and the educational reform of the 1960s. In 1968 he followed a call to the newly established Institute for Sociology at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. The establishment of the institute was an achievement by Werner Mangold. He contributed to the establishment of social science research. His commitment was to industrial sociology . The development of this subject was significantly influenced by him.

Werner Mangold's recognition in sociology was reflected in his long membership on the board of the German Society for Sociology as well as in his many years of work as a reviewer for the German Research Foundation .

Other calls followed, such as to the University of Konstanz .

After his retirement in 1992, Werner Mangold continued to take an active part in sociological research.
