Werner Petermann

Werner Petermann (* 1947 ) is a German ethnologist , editor, publicist , author and translator.

Petermann studied ethnology, philosophy and Egyptology in Munich. Although he opposed Helmut Straube's line during his studies , Petermann ultimately sees himself shaped by this ethnologist. He wrote his doctoral thesis on the "rain cults and rainmakers among Bantu -speaking ethnic groups in East and South Africa".

While he was still a student, he helped found the ethnological magazine Trickster , from which a publisher of the same name later emerged. Today Edition Trickster is part of Peter Hammer Verlag .

From the 1980s he was involved in numerous book publications and published independent works. His broad-based "History of Ethnology" (2004), which Karl-Heinz Kohl discussed in the features section of the FAZ, attracted particular attention .

Also, merits in the promotion of visual anthropology and ethnographic film. Together with Enno Patalas and others, he developed a retrospective of enthnographic film, which was reflected in the seminal publication "Seeing the Strangers" (1984). Also participation as an author in film productions. Together with Hans A. Guttner , he received the Romy in 1999 for "Kreuz und quer".

Dr. Petermann is a lecturer at the Institute for Ethnology at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich.
