Werner Plath (swimmer)
Werner Plath (born July 27, 1918 in Berlin ; † 1945 (fallen)) was a German swimmer who started for Wiking Berlin and Askania Berlin in the late 1930s . He won a total of ten German championships and was also successful internationally.
German championships
- 200 m freestyle in 1936 , 1937 , 1938 , 1940 and 1941
- 400 m freestyle in 1937 , 1940 and 1941
- 1500 m freestyle in 1940 and 1941 .
European championships
At the European Championships in London in 1938 , Plath won two medals:
- Silver in the 400 m freestyle in 4.56.2 minutes behind the Swede Björn Borg (gold in 4: 51.6 minutes)
- Gold with the 4 × 200 m freestyle relay in 9: 17.6 minutes (team: Werner Plath, Wolfgang Heimlich , Hans Freese and Werner Birr ) ahead of France (silver in 9: 22.6 minutes) and Great Britain (bronze in 9: 24.6 min.)
Olympic games
At the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, Plath was a member of the 4 × 200-meter freestyle relay, which came in 5th place in 9: 19.0 minutes (team: Werner Plath as starting swimmer, Wolfgang Heimlich, Hermann Heibel and Helmut Fischer ).
