Werner Rezzonico (born June 12, 1940 in Zurich ) is a former cyclist from Switzerland .

career

Werner Rezzonico was a trained paver and since 1955 an active cyclist as a member of RV Zurich. In 1960, by winning the Locarno road race, he was promoted to what was then the A-class for amateurs. He won the winter championship in the single pursuit over 4000 meters on the track. A year later he won the Swiss championship title in the team pursuit with his club . In 1962 he and his team were again title holders. He remained an amateur until 1964 and won numerous track races and criteria. At the end of the 1964 season, he obtained an independent license so that he could also compete in professional races.

In 1965, Rezzonico was the undisputed crowd favorite at the races on the Werner-Seelenbinder-Halle track in Berlin . After a turbulent race with his partner Detlef Turowski from the GDR, he won the 1001 lap race with a new track record. Initially, Rezzonico only came from Switzerland to supervise the team. When his driver, Jürg Ochsner, was injured, he jumped in and competed in the competitions himself.

In the professional driver's races, however, he did not achieve any successes worth mentioning, so he started three times in the six-day race in Zurich without achieving a leading position. In 1966 he got his license as an amateur again, but had bad luck with injuries due to a broken leg. In 1967 he ended his career.
