Werner Schmidt (sports educator)

Werner Schmidt (* 1949 in Essen ) is a German sports educator and university teacher .

Life

Schmidt did a teaching degree (subjects: sport, German and history) at the University of Essen from 1971 to 1975 . In 1976 he passed his second state examination and worked as a teacher. He completed his doctoral thesis (subject: aggression and sport) in 1978. In the following year, Schmidt took up a position at the University of Oldenburg as Academic Councilor for Sports Education.

In 1983 he switched to a professorship at the University of Osnabrück - Vechta Department , in 1991 he submitted his habilitation and in 1993 became professor at the chair for sports education at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena . Between 1994 and 1998 Schmidt was in charge of the institute for sports science at the Jena University.

In 1998 he left Jena and took up a professorship for sports science and sports education at the University of Duisburg-Essen .

From 1987 to 1999 Schmidt served as spokesman for the football and sports games commissions within the German Association for Sports Science (DVS). Between 1997 and 1999 he was DVS Vice President and from 1999 to 2003 Chairman. In September 2013 Schmidt was made an honorary member of the German Association for Sports Science.

Schmidt's preferred research areas include children's and youth sports, the area of ​​“social opportunities in sports”, children's sports and social research, social and intercultural learning, sports games and school sports. In 1991 he brought out the book "Teaching and Learning in Sports Games", which was reissued in 2014, he published training literature on the subject of ball games (including football in particular).
