Werner Schmitz (born October 6, 1969 ) is a former German soccer player .

Career

The striker Werner Schmitz began his career at SV Dorsten-Hardt and came to the second division club SG Wattenscheid 09 via SpVg Marl in the summer of 1989 . There he made his professional debut on September 30, 1989 in the 1-0 victory over Rot-Weiss Essen , in which Schmitz scored the winning goal after being substituted on. At the end of the season, the Wattenscheid team rose to the Bundesliga as runner-up behind Hertha BSC . Schmitz played twice in the Bundesliga and did not score a goal. In the summer of 1991 he then moved to the second division club SC Fortuna Köln , where he was not used during the 1991/92 season.

Schmitz then moved to the upper division SC Verl , with whom he qualified two years later for the newly created Regionalliga West / Südwest . However, he switched to league rivals Preußen Münster before moving on to the regional league promoted LR Ahlen in 1996 . After only one year in Ahlen, he returned to SC Verl in the summer of 1997, where he ended his career a year later.
