history

Since the Reformation was introduced in the Kirchberg district by Ottheinrich von der Pfalz in 1566 , the place and its respective church have been Protestant. After the Thirty Years' War , Catholics were granted religious freedom and had been allowed to worship in the church since 1688. In the church, Werner von Womrath , born here, was worshiped on the Catholic side . From the following year, the Catholics were given the right to joint use of the new church in 1773; it became a simultaneous church until 1912 . After protracted disputes, a contract was signed on July 5, 1910. It regulated that the Catholic community received a severance payment of 3500 marks for their waiver of rights to the previous simultaneous church. This money was the basis for their own building, for the planning of which the Cologne church architect Eduard Endler could be won. In addition, both churches agreed that the Catholics could use the - now Protestant - church on every third Sunday of the month until the construction was completed, as well as for their Werner procession on April 19th. The foundation stone of the Werner Chapel was laid on October 16, 1910, and the consecration took place on July 2, 1911. The bronze bell was cast in 1952 by the Mabilon bell foundry from the bell of the Dickenschieder Catholic Church that had remained from the war .

Building description

Werner Chapel in Womrath (b) .jpg

The simple slate-roofed hall building has three arched windows on each side and a semicircular windowless apse . The entrance area on the opposite narrow side has been drawn in and thus offers space and the opportunity to take a look into the chapel through a small arched window even when the church is closed. The wooden gate is set on the left side. The roof is crowned by a square ridge turret with a square curved hood. A metal ball serves as the tip and above it a patriarchal cross , which is supposed to remind of the revered Werner. The construction time is the time of Art Nouveau . At best, the chapel shows a simple form of style with its arched windows, the hood and the vestibule entrance.

Furnishing

The chapel took over the high altar from the 18th century from the simultaneous church.
