Wervy

Wervy was a medieval fiefdom in Flanders , which was a lordship of Ypres until the 14th century and had the status of a marquisate in the 18th century. The border between France and present-day Belgium has been running through this former territory since the early 18th century .

The Latin name of the area was Viroviacum ( Itinerarium Antonini ), from the 11th to 13th centuries it is written as Wervy (1090), Wervick (1114) or Werveka (1213).

The main town of the marquisate and thus the marquisate itself were divided in 1713 by drawing a boundary:

  • Gilles Gillon, attested in 1261, was lord of La Tour, Wevelgem, Moorsele, La Porte and Wervik.
  • Michiel van Wervik alias van Elslande was 1267–1288 Bailli of Kortrijk, Ypres and Lille
  • Wilhelm von Nivelle (Willem van Nevele) is referred to as Lord von Wervik in 1390.
  • Johanna von Wervy married Hugo V. de Maulde in 1422
  • With the Treaty of Nijmegen in 1678, the area came to France
  • With the Treaty of Utrecht (1713) Wervy was returned to Austria, only the south remained with France and became an independent municipality of Werviq-Sud.
  • Claire Eugénie, Countess von Horn , Dame d'Oosthove, was Marquise de Wervy; she was the daughter of Philippe Lamoral von Horn, Count von Houtekercke ( House of Horn ), and wife of Guillaume François de Montmorency, Vicomte de Roulers ( Roeselare ) ( House of Montmorency ); she died on April 9, 1722
  • Her son Philippe de Montmorency is attested as Marquis de Wervy in 1722
