County of Hoorn

The county of Hoorn (Dutch Horn) was in what is now the Dutch province of Limburg . The county consisted of several small areas.

Horn Castle (Limburg)

It was made an imperial county in 1450 and after the death of Count Philippe de Montmorency, Count of Hoorn , came into different hands from 1568 . The Principality of Liège had supervisory authority over them since 1576 and acquired full rights over them in 1614 . Since then, at the latest, it has been part of the Lower Rhine-Westphalian Empire , like the Liège Monastery .

In 1801 it came to France and in 1815 to the Netherlands .

The Imperial Counties of Hoorn belonged to the Rhenish-Westphalian Circle via the Liège Monastery (which in 1576 had acquired control, protection and protection over Hoorn) and, together with Liège, was de facto in 1795 and de iure in 1801 in France and in 1815 in the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

With the fourth Count of Hoorn, the main line of the family died out in 1540.

From the younger line of the noble family Horn, the line of the line of the vice counts of Veurne, Eugen Maximilian von Hornes, from 1659 3rd Comte de Baucignies, received the Spanish-Dutch title of Prince de Hornes in 1677. The 3rd Prince de Hornes was raised to the rank of imperial prince in 1736 as Prince von Hornes. The Horn family died out completely with his daughters in 1826.

The son-in-law of the last Prince of Hornes, Prince Philipp Joseph zu Salm-Kyrburg, also held the title “Prince of Hornes and Overisque” from 1763.
