The Weser Bridge Beverungen / Lauenförde connects the North Rhine-Westphalian city of Beverungen ( Höxter district ) and the Lower Saxony municipality of Lauenförde ( Holzminden district ) and is part of the federal highway 241 .
history
First bridge
Until the construction of the Weser bridge, the connection between Beverungen and Lauenförde existed exclusively through a ferry service. The old ferry house in Beverungen is still a reminder. The steel bridge then opened on December 7, 1902. According to the plans, the castle on the Beverung side of the river should be demolished for the construction of the bridge. Local residents' protests prevented this. A bridge toll of 4 pfennigs was levied for the crossing. The road surface was cobblestone.
Second bridge
As a result of the Second World War , the first steel bridge was blown up by Wehrmacht pioneers on April 7, 1945 in order to make it difficult for the advancing US troops to advance further east. The Americans set up a temporary wooden bridge to cross. After the war, a ferry service was initially set up before the construction of the new arched bridge was started on April 19, 1949 by the construction companies Wittrock and Knop from Höxter and Woldermann from Hamm. The steel girder bridge with continuous solid wall girders on a total of six supports was built for around DM 700,000 . A pair of pillars from 1902 was taken over. It was clad with Weser sandstone. The distances between the pillars are 32 and 35 meters, and 600 tons of steel were used for the bridge, as well as 1130 cubic meters of concrete and 315 cubic meters of Weser sandstone. The new bridge over the Weser was inaugurated on May 14, 1950.
From April 22, 2003 to May 14, 2004 an extensive renovation was carried out on behalf of the State Office for Road Construction North Rhine-Westphalia, Paderborn branch and during this time the bridge was completely closed to traffic, which led to protests from the population and businesspeople Renovation time of three months was planned.
At the end of January 2014, the State Office for Road Construction NRW closed the Weser Bridge to vehicles with a total weight of more than 18 tons. The minimum distance between the trucks is also set at 25 meters. This means that heavy trucks are no longer allowed to drive on the Weser Bridge and have to take a detour of 4 to 11 km over the Weser Bridge on Landesstraße 763 at Würgassen / Herstelle . Since March 18, 2014, only single-lane traffic with narrow lanes and traffic-dependent traffic lights has been possible on the bridge. This made it possible for trucks with a weight of up to 44 tons to pass the bridge. Repairing the old bridge no longer makes economic sense.
Third bridge
Due to the uneconomical repair work, Landesbetrieb Straßenbau NRW planned to build a new bridge. From spring 2017, it was erected on auxiliary supports parallel to the old bridge. The old bridge was initially usable as usual with only one lane . After the old bridge was demolished, new foundations, bridge piers and abutments were built. From mid-March 2019 to (planned) spring 2020, the old Weser bridge was completely closed to car traffic. During this time, cyclists and pedestrians could already cross the Weser over the new bridge (connected by temporary wooden walkways). On the new bridge superstructure, the new carriageway should then be moved across in February 2020. However, the move was delayed due to floods and the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic. It will finally take place on May 7, 2020.
On October 11, 2018, it was announced that clearance on the new bridge would not be possible before spring 2020. According to the current planning status, the new replacement building is to be opened to traffic in summer 2020.
