The Wesertor in the East Westphalian city of Minden is a striking city quarter at the western end of the transition over the Weser in the Minden city center district .

history

The Prussian city of Minden was surrounded by a city wall and formed the Minden fortress . The crossing over the Weser was secured with a fortress gate , the Wesertor, which had a special architecture due to the tactical location at the eastern exit of the city .

After the fortress was dissolved, the fortress gate was torn down and a square was created on the western abutment of the Weser Bridge, which was designed differently according to the tastes of the time.

In the 1970s, as part of the redevelopment of the inner city, the roundabout was demolished, Bäckerstrasse was expanded to become a pedestrian zone , the bypass roads to Klausenwall to the south and Grimpenwall to the north. They now act like a bar for pedestrian traffic , and pedestrians have to use traffic lights to cross the Wesertor crossroads. The Weser with the promenade and the Mindener Schlagde are cut off from the city center.

In the 2010s there was an attempt to take out the traffic even further out of the city and the street Grimpenwall be dismantled . A so-called city balcony should be created here with a pleasant stay on the Weser.

Today the Wesertor is the entrance to the core city of Minden and thus also the pedestrian zone.

The monument to the Great Elector stands in the southeast corner .

The former Karstadt building has been expanded as a "Wesertor" retail location. The anchor tenant here is H&M , a Swedish textile trading company, and not everyone sees the rented gym as good for urban development.
