The West Bay ( English for West Bay ) is a small cove on the west coast of the island Heard . It is located on the south side of the beginning of the Laurens Peninsula and 800 m west of Atlas Cove .
The name of the bay, due to its geographical location, goes back to American seal hunters who have been heading for the island of Heard since 1855. The name can also be found on maps of the British Challenger expedition (1872–1876), which called the island in 1874.
