The West Bridge is a road bridge in the Scottish city of Dundee in the council area of the same name . In 1985 the bridge was included in the Scottish Monument List in the highest monument category A.

history

The bridge once led the main access the meantime abandoned mansion Linlathen House . The mansion dates from 1705 and was expanded around 1830. Presumably the West Bridge was built in the course of this construction work. It is not shown on a map from 1827, whereas it is 30 years later. The nearby East Bridge , which leads to the east access, is therefore probably older. After the bridge was in disrepair, it was restored as the property developed into a housing estate. A new road bridge was also built a short distance downstream.

description

The West Bridge spans Dighty Water on the northeastern edge of Dundee. It has a strong stylistic similarity to the bridges designed by Rowland Burdon , for example the Tickford Bridge in Buckinghamshire . The four ribs that form the substructure describe elliptical arcs . A stylized cast iron keystone in the middle of the bridge hides the connection between the two arch elements. The gusset is decorated with seven ornamented circular elements. A cast iron balustrade delimits the roadway.
