The West Clare Railway (WCR) is a museum railway in County Clare , Ireland.

history

The West Clare Railway was originally operated from 1887 to 1961 and has now been rebuilt on a short section as a museum railway. The narrow-gauge railway, with a gauge of 914 mm (3 ft ), ran from Ennis, through numerous stops along the coast, via a fork at Moyasta Junction to Kilrush and Kilkee . The West Clare Railway was the last narrow-gauge passenger railway in Ireland. There were stops in Ennistymon , Lahinch and Miltown Malbay . It was featured in the song Are Ye Right There Michael? For its unreliability . known from Percy French . Although it was modernized and converted to diesel operation in the 1950s, the line was discontinued in 1961 for economic reasons.

An association maintains a railway museum at and in Moyasta station and has reopened part of the route as a museum railway. After a legal dispute lasting 16 years, the plan is to connect the route with an unrestricted level crossing secured with a traffic light system with a new museum building on the other side of the street. The no longer used sections of the route are to be converted into a cycling and hiking trail.
