When Pedro's parents learn of their son's romance, they believe they know Guadalupe's motivations for being with their son. They insinuate that the young woman is after her son because he comes from a wealthy family and can expect a large inheritance.
However, Dona Lucia Castillo and Don Ramon Castillo have to recognize that the ideas that their son has of his future, not only professionally but also in his life planning, are difficult to reconcile with their plans.
