Pedro de Cordoba (born September 28, 1881 in New York City , New York , † September 16, 1950 in Sunland , California ) was an American film and stage actor .

Life

De Cordoba, the son of a French woman and a Cuban , began his career in the theater . He made his Broadway debut in a production of Hamlet in 1902 . This was followed by appearances in Shakespeare productions of The Taming of the Shrew , What you want , The Winter's Tale and Othello, among others . From 1915 he made silent films and appeared in three Cecil B. DeMille productions, including an adaptation of Carmen . By 1925 he made a total of 25 silent films, but always returned to Broadway.

It was only with the advent of talkies that he devoted himself to his film career and turned his back on Broadway in 1935. In the same year he played alongside Errol Flynn , Olivia de Havilland and Basil Rathbone in the pirate film Unter Piratenflagge , making him one of the few silent film actors who could easily switch to talkies. In most cases, he was on rollers as Spanish or Mexican set ; therefore, although he was not granted a great film career, he was in demand as a character actor until 1950 . Among others he stood in front of the camera alongside Marlene Dietrich , Frederic March , Bette Davis and Tyrone Power . In 1942 he played a supporting role in Alfred Hitchcock's Saboteurs . From the mid-1940s, its roles became smaller. He continued to work in front of the camera until shortly before his death, and his last film was released posthumously .
