George Templeton

George Becton Templeton (born November 11, 1906 in Mount Vernon , Texas , † August 26, 1980 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American film director , producer, assistant director and production manager, who wrote the short film The Little Witch in 1946 and in 1947 for the short film College Queen was nominated for an Oscar .

Life

Templeton, who attended the University of Southern California where he was on John Wayne's freshman football team that won the PCC Championships in 1928 and the Rose Bowl in 1930 , began his career in film as an actor in minor roles. In his first film Her Man in 1930 he played a buffoon and in his second 1931 film Seas Beneath a naval reservist. In 1936 he worked as an assistant director in the Harold Lloyd film Ironically World Champion , as well as in the adventure film Scotland Yard intervenes the following year ! where he worked for director Louis King.

His first film he directed was the 1944 short film Trailin 'West . In the same year he assisted Mark Sandrich in the romantic comedy Here Come the Waves , in which Bing Crosby and Betty Hutton play the lead roles. For his short film The Little Witch (1945), in which a nightclub dancer and singer falls in love with the son of wealthy parents, Templeton was nominated for an Oscar in the category “Best Short Film” (2 film roles) , which, however, went to Gordon Hollingshead and the Christmas story Star in the Night went. Another Oscar nomination Templeton received the following year in the same category for his short film College Queen , but had to admit defeat again Hollingshead, who was with the film A Boy and His Dog for selection. In College Queen , a university tap dancer is looking for his college queen for an upcoming competition and finds her.

The 1950 historical adventure film Battle at Sunset with Robert Preston and Robert Sterling , in which brother fights brother, was directed by Templeton. For an episode of the western series Thousand Miles of Dust , he and other participants were awarded the Western Heritage Award. For the Western Charro! (1969) with Elvis Presley , Ina Balin and Victor French , Templeton was both assistant director and producer. In 1974 he finished his film work with the horror film Welcome to Arrow Beach by and with Laurence Harvey .

Templeton was married to Frances Callaghan (1915–1978). The couple had a son (1940-2008).
